Mitochondrial & cellular energy research

NAD+

Mechanistic research

NAD+ is a molecule cells use to transfer electrons and power certain enzyme reactions. It is not a peptide. Its essential role inside cells does not mean externally supplied NAD+ reliably reaches the same compartments.

Source review: September 9, 2026. Scientific evidence and trial records change over time.

01 · What is it?

The identity comes first.

NAD+ is a molecule cells use to transfer electrons and power certain enzyme reactions. It is not a peptide. Its essential role inside cells does not mean externally supplied NAD+ reliably reaches the same compartments.

Scientific classification: Non-peptide coenzyme; oxidized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide

For example. Think of a rechargeable electron carrier that is also spent by some cellular maintenance enzymes.

02 · How does it work?

The signal, explained.

It carries electrons between chemical reactions and supplies material consumed by other enzymes. The main question for an external product is whether and how it changes the right cellular pools.

The key research focus is Redox enzymes; NAD-consuming sirtuins, PARPs and CD38. A target describes where an interaction may occur; it does not by itself establish a benefit.

Learn the Science · mechanism

NAD+/NADH participate in oxidation-reduction reactions. Sirtuins and PARPs consume NAD+ in signaling and repair-related reactions; precursor availability and salvage pathways regulate pools.

03 · What happens after the signal?

Follow the downstream effects.

Electron transfer connects nutrient oxidation to mitochondrial respiration. NAD consumption can affect repair signaling and gene regulation, but changing blood markers does not demonstrate restored tissue function.

To connect this mechanism to a real-world outcome, researchers need to establish exposure at the target, measure the response and test whether the change matters in a controlled human study.

04 · What is it commonly researched for?

The questions researchers are asking.

Scientists study redox balance, metabolism, aging biology and NAD precursor interventions. Precursor trials cannot automatically establish the effects of NAD+ itself.

These are areas of investigation, not promises about a Maison product.

05 · Body systems involved

Where the biology connects.

Mitochondria
Cellular organelles involved in energy conversion and metabolic signaling, rather than a separate organ.
Liver
A central site of nutrient handling, metabolic enzymes and selected downstream hormone responses.
Skeletal muscle
Relevant to energy use, mitochondrial activity or tissue-model endpoints.
Brain
Relevant to neural signaling, appetite, behavior or stress circuitry described above.

06 · Receptor / target profile

The molecular reference card.

Primary receptor or target
Redox enzymes; NAD-consuming sirtuins, PARPs and CD38
Secondary interactions
No additional primary target established for the research claim discussed.
Where it is found
Different pools exist in cytosol, nucleus and mitochondria.
Activation, inhibition or interaction
NAD+/NADH participate in oxidation-reduction reactions. Sirtuins and PARPs consume NAD+ in signaling and repair-related reactions; precursor availability and salvage pathways regulate pools.
Important downstream pathways
Electron transfer connects nutrient oxidation to mitochondrial respiration. NAD consumption can affect repair signaling and gene regulation, but changing blood markers does not demonstrate restored tissue function.

07 · Evidence quality

What carries weight—and what does not.

STRONGER EVIDENCE

Its endogenous biochemical role is well established. Broad wellness benefits of external NAD+ are not.

EMERGING HUMAN EVIDENCE

Human outcome evidence remains limited for this exact form and proposed use.

EARLY / PRECLINICAL EVIDENCE

The mechanistic observations described above do not establish the same outcomes in people.

UNKNOWN OR NOT WELL ESTABLISHED

Long-term outcomes, comparative benefit, clinically meaningful effects and safety for broad wellness use are not well established.

A familiar mechanism, a patent, a testimonial or a trial registration alone cannot establish human efficacy or product quality.

08 · Who is studying it?

Follow the original research.

No current sponsor-led clinical development program was verified for this exact research identity. This does not prove that no study exists; consult current records and distinguish related molecules.

Regulatory context: No approved medical use for this research identity was established in the sources reviewed. This is not a determination of authorization in every country. The research material discussed here must not be assumed equivalent to a licensed medicine.

09 · Research terminology

A small glossary for this page.

Target

The molecule or biological structure a compound interacts with.

Pathway

A sequence of cellular events connecting a signal to a response.

Preclinical

Research outside human clinical trials, including cells and animals.

redox

Oxidation and reduction: chemical reactions involving electron transfer.

sirtuins

NAD-dependent enzymes involved in regulating proteins and cellular responses.

PARPs

Enzymes that consume NAD+ to modify proteins, including in DNA-damage signaling.

CD38

An enzyme involved in NAD breakdown and cellular signaling.

Biomarker

A measurable biological feature. A change in a marker does not always translate into a meaningful health outcome.

Target engagement

Evidence that a compound actually reaches and interacts with the intended biological target.

Randomized controlled trial

A study that assigns participants by chance to comparison groups, helping separate an intervention’s effects from other influences.
